Mark is Ireland’s first Professor of Digital Learning and Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning (NIDL) at Dublin City University (DCU). He originally began his educational career as a primary teacher and now has over 25 years experience of working in Higher Education. Over the last decade he has served in a number of leadership roles and is currently an Executive Committee member of the European Distance and E-learning Network (EDEN) and member of the Supervisory Board of the
European Association of Distance Teaching Universities (EADTU). Mark also serves on the Board of the Irish
National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and chairs the Teaching and Learning Committee of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities. Before moving to Ireland he was Director of the National Centre for Teaching and Learning at Massey University, and President of the
New Zealand Association for Open, Flexible and Distance Learning (DEANZ). Mark is a recipient of a
National Award for Sustained Excellence in Tertiary Teaching and albeit from a distance remains a member of the
New Zealand Academy of Tertiary Teaching Excellence.
